About this site
Orchid Tasmania is a site for showcasing and sharing my love of the Orchids. I hope to be updating the Orchid Gallery regularly. All of the photographs are taken with a dedicated macro lens, using a very short depth of field, so as to isolate what I see to be the most interesting aspect of the flower. I hope you will enjoy my interpretation of the Orchids.
Soon, we will enable the purchasing of wall art, featuring some of these images. The prints will be available on archival Canvas or Aluminum, and details will be posted about the cost and processes involved in ordering these images.
In the meantime, please Enjoy.
The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants with colorful and fragrant blooms. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with over 20,000 species, found throughout 880 genera. (Ref: Wilkepedia 2012)
According to Greek mythology, Orchis was the son of a nymph and a satyr. During a celebratory feast for Bacchus, Orchis committed the crime of raping one of Bacchus’s favourite priestesses. When Bacchus discovered this crime, he ordered for Orchis to being torn apart by wild beasts. After much pleading from Orchis’s parents, Bacchus took pity on Orchis and changed him into a flower, now commonly referred to as the Orchid.
